Melissa started Crossfit right after the 2012 Open. She wanted to try something different for a few months because she was bored out of her mind running around the block and pretending to know what she was doing at the gym. "Pre-crossfit I had never picked up a barbell so I was pretty clueless as to what I was doing when I started".
"In high school, I was a competitive cheerleader and loved the rush that competing gave me. About 6 months into crossfit, I signed up for my first team competition. I was still pretty weak at the time and could seriously only do a few toes to bar, box jumps and run. I couldn't even over head squat 65 pounds at the time. Thankfully, my teammates carried me on that one! After that competition, I knew I wanted to get stronger and compete. That was a turning point for me. I started adding in more lifting, eating meat and tried to put on muscle.
My plan worked and I ended up qualifying for regionals that year. I still struggled with the heavier weights but I was just thrilled to be there competing with such amazing athletes. I also qualified as an individual for 2014 but decided to go team instead because I wanted to make it to the games. It was such an awesome decision! For 2015, I hope to qualify again as an individual and give it my all!"
How has crossfit changed your life? "Crossfit has changed my life in so many ways. I'm the most confident and happiest that I've ever been. Crossfit has allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people and has given me so many opportunities that I wouldn't of had without finding Crossfit. I love seeing how confident people become (especially women) when they see what they are capable of! It's just amazing to me!"
Philosophy on Life and Training: "Sometimes it's hard to balance training with having a full-time career, being a wife, doggie momma and just enjoying time with family and friends. My philosophy on life is to give 100% to everything that I do and to always put family, friends and God above all else. While I'm not perfect, I do the best that I can! As for Crossfit, I love it because it's just so much fun for me. The day that it stops being fun is the day that I will no longer compete... but I hope that day doesn't come for a long time."
